Dark circles are shadowy area around or under the eyes commonly occurring in all ages. It is not a serious condition of skin nor is harmful. It just makes you look exhausted and pale all the time no matter if you are feeling fresh.

Skin under the eyes is thinnest compared to rest of the body. The blood vessels beneath eyes are often reflected on the skin and we call it dark circles. Same way the bruise color is most intense around eyes and takes a lot of time to fade away. The blood from the ruptured vessels are prominent making it purplish blue because of thin patch of skin.

Dark circles are caused by many reasons.

  • Aging: As we age, skin loses the collagen and elastin, two main elements in keeping skin young and fresh. Skin becomes thin and saggy and loses its tightness. As skin becomes thinner, blood vessels are clearly visible then.
  • Fatigue: Lack of rest or sleep contributes to enhance appearance of dark circles around eyes.
  • Allergies: Different allergies also becomes the causing factors f discoloration of skin under skin.
  • Poor diet: Often an unbalanced diet makes your eyes darker and make you look pale overall.
  • Heredity: Dark circles are often due to genetics. It often run in the family and no matter how good your diet is and how much you take rest but you don’t actually get rid of dark circles.
  • Pigmentation: The more skin is prone to pigments, more likely dark circles are believed to appear.
  • Too much screen time: An increased screen time e.g. TV, tablets, phones or laptops etc. also causes dark circles.
  • Scratching: Too much rubbing and scratching of eye area brings the shadowy presence around eyes.
  • Stress: High levels of stress is most common reason of dark circles.
  • Melanin: Excess sun exposure produces more melanin and therefore discolor the skin around eyes.


  1. Tea bags:

The tea extracts are believed to help disappear dark circles and makes skin even tone. It is one of most easy and effective home remedy in getting rid of dark circles.

How to use it:

Whenever you make tea out of teabags, don’t throw the used bags rather keep them in refrigerator. Put the bags on each eye for 10 minutes and then discard them. You can repeat it twice daily.

  1. A Good Sunscreen:

Daily sun exposure damages skin in many ways. The harmful radiations causes early aging. Sun rays produces melanin pigment in the skin. The more skin is exposed, the more melanin is produced. It brings discoloration of the skin and dark circles are striking visible because of it.

How to use it:

You are required to buy a sunscreen lotion with a good SPF. Apply it before going out in the morning. If your daylight exposure is more, you should better apply it twice. Also keep umbrella in hand to protect you skin from damaging rays.

  1. Cucumbers:

Cucumbers are famous in healing many skin conditions. It helps in lightening skin color and also gives moisture to the skin as dry skin is also susceptible to dark circles. It gives soothing effect and makes your eyes look fresh.

How to use it:

Cut two slices of freshly washed cucumber. Let them rest on each eye for 10 to 15 minutes. And remove it. Wash your eyes and apply good moisturizer afterwards. You can apply these once daily.


Several people are allergic to cucumbers and shows skin irritation and inflammation. In such card discard the use.

  1. Almond Oil:

Almond oil is well known in reducing dark circles miraculously. It is rich with Vitamin E and helps in keeping skin healthy and hydrated. Regular use of almond oil helps in supple younger looking skin in short period of time.

How to apply it:

Gently massage almond oil around eyes with help of fingertips for few minutes. Be generous in applying a good amount of it because less amount would cause rubbing and it would further favor in dark circles appearance.

Let the oil stay overnight on the skin. The essential nutrients would get penetrated into the skin. Wash your face well in the morning and let it be part of your daily beauty regimen.

  1. Potatoes:

Potatoes have natural bleaching properties that helps in even toning of skin. They naturally brightens the complexion and reduces dark patches around eyes.

How to use it:

One way of using potatoes for getting rid of dark circles is like cucumbers. Get two sliced potatoes and let them rest on eyes for few minutes. Rinse it well afterwards.

Other way is to grate some potatoes and extract the juice out of it. Slightly dip a cotton ball in the extract and tap it around the eye area. Do it several times. You can use this remedy once daily.

  1. Tomatoes:

Tomatoes are excellent in skin lightening. Naturally decreases shadowy eyes. It also keeps skin hydrated and fresh looking.

How to use it:

Take few tomatoes and blend them. Add lemon juice to it and apply it on face with help of cotton ball. You can do it twice daily and see the rapid action elements of tomatoes magically.

It is also recommended to drink tomato juice daily which will contribute in removing dark circles.

  1. Yoga:

As we have discussed earlier that high levels of stress are dangerously linked to bringing dark eye patches. Yoga is most effective way of bringing down your stress levels and keeping your mind and body in balance. Yoga helps in keeping you calm. Along with yoga, good diet is also necessary.

  1. Water:

Dehydration is believed to be one of the great reasons of unhealthy skin conditions. It makes your skin dry with time and causes pre mature aging. 1.5 liter of water is a must as advised by the doctor. Water acts as cleanser of the body removing chemicals and free radicals which causes early aging. Moderate water intake keeps skin supple and body healthy.
