Simple Home Remedies For Laryngitis

Do you feel an irresistible itch in your throat too? often times when we are experiencing sore throat, the feeling arises where we feel that our voice is blocked. The inflammation of larynx is called laryngitis. Many of you might have heard about larynx as “the voice box” of human body. So when you feel your voice is blocked during sore throat, you are technically right, it is temporarily inflammation.

Larynx  is at the back of throat and start of the windpipe. Generally it helps to produce sounds and provide help in respiratory system. It keeps a balance on what goes inside the windpipe so that no food is accidently sent there. The volume, pitch and shrillness of voice depends upon this part larynx. Sometimes when we are going through a bacterial or viral infection, they make their way to the throat. Larynx being the first organ exposed also becomes a victim of the microbial attack. Some other factors may include medicinal reaction, smoking, allergies or a few gastric diseases.

How To Diagnose Laryngitis?

Laryngitis is easy to check. You can feel it yourself even without going to a doctor. The most frequent symptoms which you will see are as following.

  • Weakness of voice
  • Constant cough
  • Mild to high fever
  • An urge to clear throat
  • Breathing issue (rarely)

Sometime laryngitis is not a disease itself and it is just a part of other infections. I may last from a few days to weeks, depending upon the reason and the host immune system. if it doesn’t go after 3 days, you must get it checked by a doctor. However, you can help yourself with easy home remedies which are helpful in laryngitis.

  1. Gargle with Salt

Salt is the most basic remedy which needs no extra effort to use. Table salt is available at every home. You might don’t know but the salt has antimicrobial properties. If your laryngitis is due to a microbial infection, gargling warm water with salt will provide comfort.  Simply make a mixture of boiling water with 1-2 tablespoon salt. Let it boil and then cool for a while. Use it for gargling, make sure it reaches your throat. This is the best and easiest way to sooth laryngitis. you can repeat it several times a day for as long as you want. There are absolutely no side effects.

  1. Drink Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has role to heal many health issues. It is by far the most common and healthy version of vinegar. The natural antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties make it a wise choice in such infections. For laryngitis, you have to make sure that it reaches to the throat. For this, you can use it to gargle. Yes, gargling with diluted apple cider vinegar helps to overcome laryngitis in no time. You can also use it orally by mixing it with water and honey. This mixture can be used as an alternative to tea when you have throat inflammation.

  1. The Ginger Tea

Next helpful home item is ginger. Many of us know the health benefits of ginger. But the good news is that it has active compounds called Gingerols which give it anti-inflammatory properties. Ginger can be eaten raw, in food or as ginger tea. Among all these, taking ginger tea is the most convenient option. Ginger helps to sooth larynx and makes the voice normal again. Ginger Tea is made by boiling ginger in water with a sweetener or honey. It can be used multiple times a day.

Honey is one of the most commonly used household ingredient. We use it in recipes of food and beverages. The researchers suggest honey to have high medicinal value. It kills the bacteria and virus and boost the immunity. Laryngitis is the inflammation of inner membranes. Eating raw honey daily helps to heal mucus membranes naturally. It also helps to open the voice box. You can use it as it is or make tea with lemon in hot water. This herbal tea works for many benefits. Taking it 2-3 times a day is effective to sooth throat.

  1. Onion Syrup

Onion is another herb which is part of our daily diet. It is frequently available in our kitchen at home. Being a natural expectorant it helps to overcome inflammation of larynx in no time. Onion syrup is available in market and also can be made at home. Take 3-4 medium onions and wash them. Cut them into pieces and simmer in water. Once the solution becomes thick, remove the onion pieces and use this water with dilution. You can add one table spoon to one glass with honey and lemon juice. Take it once or twice a day.

They can kill the bacteria responsible for inflammation of the throat, itch and blockage of the voice. Gargle with mouthwash and clean it completely. Using mouthwash will sooth the throat and heal it internally.

  1. Treat It With Fruit Juices

Citric fruits are helpful to treat blocked larynx. A mixture if fruit juice can be used such as apple, orange, cranberry grapes or pineapple. Radish, carrots and ginger can also be used to make a delicious juice which heals the mucous membranes from swelling.

  1. Green Tea

Green tea is not just helpful for weight loss. it also treats laryngitis. the antimicrobial property of green tea kills the bacteria in throat. Anti-inflammatory property heals the mucous membranes. Using a hot tea soothes the throat and a person feels comfort while consuming it. It can be used multiple times a day.
