Remedies For Ear Pain In Toddlers

Ear pains can be extremely uncomfortable especially in infants. You can never guess what is making your baby cry. However, you can always guess it from some common signs. These signs include irritation, pulling ear, not eating properly, excessive crying, fever, not sleeping enough and much more. It takes so much time to guess that the baby is having pain in the ear. Once you confirm it’s the ear which is causing the problem, the next question is what is wrong with it. obviously, the baby can’t explain to you what has happened. It might be an insect bite, fungal infection or bacterial infection.

Ear infections are not contagious. They aren’t even dangerous for the health. Everyone receives them by chance, same is the case with toddlers. An ear infection may be silent for a long time and doesn’t show as any of the common symptoms. They can affect the hearing ability of your baby. So it’s better to treat these infections at home, even when you a slight hint of ear infection.

Common Home Remedies for Ear Pain And Infections

When it comes to hints, every parent tries best to get them so that they can understand what is bothering their baby. To help, you always have home based remedies which can significantly reduce the infection, making you toddler healthy again. Sometimes they are better than the medicines and you don’t even need to visit a doctor for it.

The Onion Juice

Onion is a natural antimicrobial which helps to get rid of the bacteria and fungi. The most frequent reasons for ear pain is a bacterial or fungal infection, for which onion juice can help. You just need two to three drops of onion juice and place them in each ear. Do not repeat it more than twice a day.

Warm Olive Oil

Olive oil is a natural carrier oil which is a long time associated with bacterial infections. Due to its thickness and viscosity, once it is poured onto the affected area, it leaves no breathing space for the microbe either bacteria or fungi. In result, the survival of these microbes is hardest. Most of the times, they die and you get an infection free health. You can even use the same for your toddler’s ear too. Just pour one or two drops of warm olive oil and let it work for you. Use it twice a day.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is not a natural agent but it’s a common household item. Due to its high level of efficiency, it is used in various home based remedies. You can use it for treating ear pain and infections too. this remedy requires precision and care and you must not use it if you are not sure about it. A few drops of hydrogen peroxide in each ear helps to ease the pain by healing the infection caused by any microbe. After a few minutes, it must be cleaned.

Warm Compress

A warm compress helps to ease the pain. just like as it works for the muscular pains it provides relief in ear pain. you can use a warm, not hot water bottle to the affected area for 10-15 minutes. It will provide the relief for pain. however for the internal infection to heal, you must need a remedy that works from inside.

Garlic Oil

Garlic oil has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects like the onion. It will ease the pain and kill the bacteria inside your ear. It’s good to keep garlic oil at your house. At the first sign of pain or infection, put only one drop of garlic oil to each ear of your toddler. You can repeat it two or three times a day unless it gets better. Garlic oil is easily available in the market, do not try to make it at home unless you don’t know the recipe and procedure. Otherwise, you can get it from health stores at an affordable price.

Stay Hydrated

Hydration is necessary not just to be healthy but also to prevent certain infections. Increase the fluid content of your child. Help them swallowing which may open up the Eustachian tube so that the trapped fluid inside the ear can drain out.  it will provide relief to the baby and ease the pain.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is effective to reduce the swelling and inflammation of the middle ear. You can use it as an additional component but it does not as such help for ear pain. for toddlers under 6 months of age, do not try this remedy.

Elevate The Mattress

Sometimes the pain is due to the fluid which is trying to come out and not finding space or position for that. For this, you can elevate the mattress under your child’s head. Do not use pillows in such condition, just make the mattress rise. It will help to fit into a position for ear drain.

Use A Humidifier

You can install a humidifier at your house which will counteract the dry indoor air. Once the surrounding is changed, it will be easy for you to control the ear pain and infection. A balanced moisture level of air helps to reduce the inflammation of membranes inside the ear and think the mucus in Eustachian tubes. It eventually provides relief to the baby.

Homeopathic Ear drops

If none of these remedies work, you might like to try the homeopathic ear drops.  These ear drops are generally mild in nature which are made up of organic ingredients such as garlic, mullein, lavender, calendula, and St. John’s wort in olive oil. All these ingredients are helpful to ease the pain in the ear. They also reduce the inflammation and get rid of the microbe responsible for it. if you have an infant, always stock such herbal or homeopathic ear drops at home.

Anti Biotic Medicines

If the pain is intense and no remedy is making it even slightly better, probably this is the time that you should start giving your toddler an antibiotic. The infection is only under control when they are at an initial level. Once they are reached to the higher level, the solution is antibiotics alone. Acetaminophen is one such type of antibiotic which can be given to babies. Only if your baby is 6 months old or more. The common name of this chemical is Tylenol. It helps to reduce the pain and fever caused by the infection. If you are unable to find an over the counter antibiotic of this chemical, you might need your baby to get checked by a doctor first.
