Home Remedies For Treating Conjunctivitis In Children

Does your child often encounter problems such as red or pink eyes? Do you find his eyes swollen and always discharging a watery fluid? Pay attention, for your child might be having conjunctivitis.

Conjunctivitis is commonly known as pink eye. It is characterized by inflamed conjunctiva, which is a transparent layer in the human eyes forming the border of the white parts. Why does conjunctivitis occur? There are several answers to this question as the reason can be a pathogenic infection or a simple allergy. Dust, pollen, smoke and other irritants can also induce it.

Conjunctivitis is very common and can affect both you and your child. It can also occur in one or both eyes.

How can it be distinguished? Because of its characteristic symptoms. You will observe redness in the white parts of your child’s eye. The eyes will continuously discharge a watery fluid. Mild pain will also accompany initially, increasing in severity as the time passes. Burning, itching, and soreness of eye will follow

The condition can be disturbing for your child because of the redness in his eyes. If you still choose to neglect it, be aware that the infection can spread quickly. It can even make your child miss a few days of school.

Do not be upset, for conjunctivitis does not alter the vision.

In the majority of the cases, the infection can go away in 5 to 7 days. However, the symptoms usually become so irritating that medical help might be required. While providing medical assistance to your child, there are some home remedies that you can use to ease his pain.

Make Use Of A Warm Compress

If your child is constantly complaining about the pain in his eye, you can prepare a warm compress for him. A warm compress will reduce his pain as well as the inflammation. It can also clear the watery discharge from the eye for some time.

Always prefer using a warm compress if the conjunctivitis is due to an infection, either viral or bacterial.

  • Take a clean cloth and dip it in a bowl containing lukewarm water. Take out the excess water.
  • Press the soaked cloth over the closed eye in a gentle way for a few minutes.
  • Repeat the process several times a day

If you see that the outer edge of the patient’s eye has some crusting, use the warm compress to remove it as well.

Remember to use two different pieces of cloth if both eyes are infected.

Get Colloidal Silver

Because of its strong properties, colloidal silver can treat different infections of the eye in a magical way. Hence, you can easily apply it for treating your child’s infected eye.

Colloidal silver is particularly effective for conjunctivitis caused by a virus or a bacterium.

It is quite easy to use colloidal silver. You just have to place 2 drops of it in the eye of your child. Make sure that he blinks a little so that it can get to the roots of the eyelashes.

You will have to repeat this process two times every day. Be careful not to use this remedy for more than 2 days.

Prepare Some Black Tea

Black tea is an exceptional and remedial substance for reducing the infection that causes pink eye. It consists of substances named as tannins. These tannins are what reduce the inflammation and itchiness in the infected eye.

Black tea can effectively fight the virus or bacteria causing pink eye. You will observe that the process of healing speeds up as you start using black tea.

  • Take some lukewarm water and add a black tea bag in it.
  • Let it stay in until the water loses its heat.
  • Place the tea bag on the infected eye for 15 minutes.
  • Repeat the process with intervals

Don’t forget to use two separate tea bags if both eyes have caught the infection.

Additionally, a weak solution of black tea can also be prepared to wash the eyes of children if they are slightly older.

Buy Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a strong agent. It can treat so many different diseases including pink eye. There are certain antimicrobial properties of apple cider vinegar which can help it combat against bacteria causing conjunctivitis.

Using apple cider vinegar for getting rid of conjunctivitis is rather easy and involves the following steps:

  • Take half cup of water. Boil it and allow it to cool.
  • Add one-fourth teaspoon of raw apple cider vinegar in it.
  • Take a few cotton balls, dip them in this solution, and place them on the closed eyes.
  • You can also use these balls for wiping out the outer eyes.
  • Repeat the process multiple times for two or three days.

Your kid might complain that the solution is stinging his eye, but it is temporary.

Apply Boric Acid

Boric acid is applicable for different infections related to the eye. You can absolutely count on it for treating pink eye of your kid. Boric acid possesses some antibacterial and antifungal effects which can solve the problem in an efficient way.

What else it can do is that it can remove inflammation and redness of the eye. The watery discharge will reduce and the burning sensation will fade away.

For using boric acid to treat conjunctivitis, you can follow these steps

  • Take one cup of boiled water and add one teaspoon of boric acid in it. Allow the solution to cool down completely.
  • Pour the solution in a glass bottle with a dropper. Make sure that the bottle is sterilized.
  • Use the dropper to put two drops of solution in the eye. Repeat it four times on a daily basis

If your child does not like to place drops of the solution in his eye, you can use cotton balls. Soak these balls in the same solution and apply them on the corners of the eyes.

Do the cleaning with cotton balls several times a day.

Find Some Activated Charcoal

For observing an instant relief from conjunctivitis, use activated charcoal.

Mix it in a small amount in half cup of water. Strain the mixture and use a few drops of it directly in the infected eye.

Otherwise, you can mix an even smaller amount of activated charcoal in water and use cotton balls to apply it on the eye. Use separate cotton balls for both eyes.

Repeat a few times every day to make it work.
